Isola Bella - Taormina - Sicilia

Isola Bella is a small island located in the homonymous bay below Taormina connected to the mainland by a narrow sandy path. The Beautiful Island belonged to Ferdinand I of Bourbon, who in 1806 donated it to the town of Taormina. In 1890 it was bought by Lady Florence Trevelyan. After several owners and tradings the island was declared an historic – artistic monumet in 1984, purchased by the Department of Cultural Heritage in 1990 and 1998 was established as a protected natural site, managed by the WWF, then by the Province of Messina and recently passed under management of CUTGANA, center environmental protection of Catania University. Isola Bella is easily reached from the center of Taormina with the cable that connects Taormina to Mazzaro. For walkers it is nice take the road that leads to the sea from Belvedere in Via Pirandello, it arrives straight to the entrance of Isola Bella Nature Reserve. To the spontaneous “Macchia Mediterranean”, alternate fine woods plants desired by Lady Florence Trevelyan. There are also a number of interesting and some rare endemic spacies. The fauna is mainly represented by reptiles, insects and birds that inhabit the island year-round, other birds are found only for a few months during their migrations. The most populated areas are the rocks and cliffs. Although the sea is an integral part of the reserve does not fall under its management. Its waters are home to a multitude of algae, colorful fish, crustaceans, molluscs and other organisms.
